When I got home, I told Joanna about my upcoming date. I was worried that she might be disappointed that I was going to miss a good portion of the celebration, but she really liked the idea of me going out with kids my own age.

Mom got home about an hour late, but that still left her a whole hour before the people would arrive. She changed her outfit. She wasn’t as artsy looking as Joanna, but I guess she felt that her business suit was too formal for the occasion, so she put on jeans and a t-shirt while Joanna and I set up the patio tables outside.

Our house had a flat porch that had to be held up by wooden stilts because our backyard curved steeply down a hill where it ended at a fence that separated our house from the house behind us. There were steps that led from the back porch to the backyard. The hill in our backyard curved steeply enough so that when I was standing at our back door I could look into the third floor window of the houses that bordered our property. The first guests started arriving about 15 minutes before seven. Most of these were friends of my parents who all loved me. There was Timothy and Belladonna; she wasn’t born with that name, she had it changed and I can’t remember what it used to be. They had been married for 12 years now and brought their three children with them. There was Alice, a woman in her forties with scraggly red hair wearing a faded tie dye dress, Saffron and Gloria, who were another same sex couple who had been together a long time, but had no interest in getting married unlike Mom and Joanna who had married three years ago. There was Gregory and his brother, George, who both hosted some kind of trading web site, and several others.

Joanna seemed to have this amazing ability to make and keep friends. Mom was pretty good at it too, but I often doubted that I ever would be.

I found myself being more eager for the date the closer that it got. When it was first arranged
